Privacy Policy

Image Describer ("we," "us," or "our") operates image-describer.app. This policy explains how we handle information when you visit our website, use our AI image description tools, create an account, or contact us. For privacy questions or requests, email [email protected].

1. Information we collect

Images and task inputs

When you run the image describer, we receive the image you submit, your selected task and language, and any instructions, questions, or context you provide. Images and text can contain personal information about you or other people, including faces, names, addresses, or text visible in screenshots. Submit only information you have permission to share and that is necessary for your task.

The public image describer works without an account. Selecting an image creates a preview in your browser; the image is sent for processing when you start generation.

Account and billing information

If you use account features, we collect information such as your name, email address, profile image, sign-in identifiers, and account preferences. If you sign in through a third-party provider, we receive the account information that provider shares with us, such as your email address and public profile. We also keep session and authentication records needed to secure your account.

If you purchase a paid offering, our payment processor, Stripe, handles payment details. We receive purchase and subscription information, such as customer identifiers, the selected product, and billing status. We do not receive your full payment card number through our checkout integration.

Technical, usage, and referral information

Our website and infrastructure providers may process IP addresses, browser and device information, requested pages, timestamps, response status, and diagnostic or security logs. We use Plausible analytics to understand website traffic and usage. We may also collect referral information, such as campaign parameters and the referring website, and associate it with an account when you sign in.

Communications

When you email us or submit the contact form, we receive your contact details, message, and any information you choose to include.

2. How image processing works

To generate a description, transcription, alt text, prompt, or answer, our server validates and re-encodes your image, removes embedded metadata, and may resize it. We send the processed image and relevant task inputs to the AI service provider configured for the tool. The provider generates text, which we stream back to your browser.

The public image description workflow does not save uploaded images or generated text to an account history or our application database. Results are held in the current browser session so you can edit, copy, or download them. Save any results you want to keep before leaving or reloading the page.

This does not mean that processing is entirely on your device or that every provider immediately deletes all data. AI and infrastructure providers may process or retain request information under their own terms, security practices, and retention settings. We cannot promise a universal deletion deadline across those providers. Contact us if you need information about the providers used for your request before submitting sensitive content.

We do not operate a model-training workflow using uploads to the public image describer. Sending content for AI inference is a separate processing activity; the provider's own terms and settings determine its handling of submitted data. We do not promise that all providers offer the same training or retention restrictions.

3. Why we use information

We use information to:

  • Provide requested image analysis and return generated text.
  • Create and maintain accounts, authenticate users, and manage preferences.
  • Process purchases, subscriptions, and any applicable credits.
  • Respond to support requests and send account or service notices.
  • Understand traffic, diagnose errors, and improve usability and reliability.
  • Prevent abuse, secure the service, and enforce our Terms of Service.
  • Meet legal obligations, maintain required records, and handle disputes.

Where European Economic Area or United Kingdom data protection law applies, our legal bases are performing a contract or taking steps at your request, legitimate interests in running and securing the service and understanding its use, compliance with legal obligations, and consent where required. Where we rely on consent, you may withdraw it without affecting processing that took place before withdrawal. If you do not provide information needed for a particular feature, we may be unable to provide that feature.

4. When we share information

We share information as needed with:

  • AI providers: processed images and task inputs needed to generate results, including through an API gateway where configured.
  • Infrastructure and service providers: hosting, storage, database, email delivery, analytics, and security services supporting our operations.
  • Payment and sign-in providers: information needed for transactions, subscription management, or the sign-in method you choose.
  • Legal or safety recipients: where required by law or reasonably necessary to investigate abuse, prevent fraud, or protect people and legal rights.
  • A successor operator: in connection with a merger, acquisition, financing, or transfer of the service, subject to applicable privacy requirements.

We do not sell personal information or share it for cross-context behavioral advertising. We do not publish your uploaded images or generated descriptions as a public gallery through the image description workflow.

5. Cookies and browser storage

The website uses cookies or similar storage for functions such as authentication, preferences, and recording cookie choices. Referral cookies can record how you found the site. Analytics requests provide information about visits and usage to our analytics service.

You can block or delete cookies through your browser and use any privacy controls offered on the website. Blocking cookies may prevent account or preference features from working. The image describer's preview and current result are maintained in page memory; they are not an account backup.

6. How long we retain information

Retention depends on the type of information and why it is needed:

  • Public image description requests: the application processes images and text for the current request without creating a saved account history. Provider-side processing and retention are described in Section 2.
  • Account records: retained while needed to provide account services, then deleted or de-identified when no longer needed, subject to legal and operational requirements.
  • Billing records: retained as needed for accounting, tax, fraud prevention, and dispute resolution.
  • Support, security, and diagnostic records: retained as needed to resolve requests, investigate incidents, maintain reliability, and meet legal obligations.

Some information may remain in backups until those backups are replaced or expire. We may preserve records when required by law or needed for an unresolved dispute. Deleting an account does not necessarily erase records a payment processor or other independent provider is legally required to keep.

7. Your rights and choices

Depending on your location and applicable law, you may request access to, correction of, deletion of, or a portable copy of personal information. You may also have rights to restrict processing, withdraw consent, and appeal a refusal of a privacy request.

Right to object: where applicable, you may object to processing based on our legitimate interests, including related profiling, and to processing for direct marketing.

You can update available profile settings or use the account deletion option in account settings. You may also send requests to [email protected], including if you used the tool without an account. Do not include sensitive images or identification documents in an initial request. We may ask for information reasonably needed to verify your identity and locate relevant records. We respond within the period required by applicable law and do not discriminate against people for exercising their rights.

You may complain to your local data protection authority, including the UK Information Commissioner's Office where applicable. You may contact us first, but you do not have to do so before making a complaint.

8. International processing and security

We and our providers may process information in countries other than your country of residence, where privacy protections may differ. Where applicable law requires safeguards for international transfers, those transfers must rely on a valid mechanism, such as an adequacy decision or appropriate contractual safeguards. Contact us for information about safeguards relevant to your data.

We use technical and organizational measures intended to protect information. No online service, transmission, or storage system can guarantee absolute security. Avoid uploading information you cannot authorize an external service to process.

9. Children

The service is not directed to children under 13 or a higher minimum age required by local law. We do not knowingly collect personal information from children below that age. If you believe a child has provided personal information, contact us so we can investigate and take appropriate steps.

10. Changes and contact

We may update this policy as the service changes. We will update the date above and provide additional notice of material changes where required by law.

For questions about this policy, our handling of information, or a privacy request, email [email protected] or use our contact form.
